It's In The Blood
Regular readers of this blog (both of you) will know of my dedication to the Melbourne Football Club. Here it is in earlier times.
This photograph has been pinned to my father's pinboard at his various offices for as long as I can remember. That's me on the right, and my middle brother, Tom, on the left. We are at Merimbula, at Easter, around the mid 80s, and we'd just had a kick with our new birthday footy.
Note the following:
1. The fact that we are not twins apparently did not preclude my mother from dressing us in matching Adidas Rome, sports socks, boardshorts, Swatch watches and Dees jumpers.
2. Our healthy glow and hopeful faces - our cheerful outlook on life has not yet been dashed by Jim Stynes running across the mark to deny Melbourne its first Grand Final berth in 27 years, nor by the flogging Hawthorn gave us when we finally got there in 1988.
3. Our unfortunate haircuts.
What the photo doesn't show you is that Tom by this stage could already kick and handball with both feet and would frequently come off the victor in the endless games of "Marks" we played in the backyard. "Marks" consisted of us standing at opposite ends of the garden, throwing the ball up somewhere in the middle, and running at each other, trying either to take the mark or to inflict maximum pain by delivering a knee to the ribcage.
There was also an indoor version played on our knees with a fluffy footy in the hallway. It was much better for body on body work.

Firstly, damn cute childhood photo.
Secondly, apologies for impeding on delightful Dees related football talk to ask an unrelated question/launch into an unrelated rant. That is, the question/rant is actually related to your Links sidebar. This brings me to thirdly:
The very lovely Mandy Patinkin. Are you disturbed to hear that he currently appears in a TV ad in the USA for a pharmaceutical company? He walks and talks towards camera, wearing a sensible sweater, talking up the benefits of a particular anti-depressant. This is no Rachel Griffiths or even (shudder) Jeff Kennett promoting public awareness of depression or raising money for a charity, it's just "buy this product instead of the others because it's blah blah, and tested in blah blah, and P.S. (just quietly because I'm legally required to say so) it could also cause constipation or dizziness".
"EGAD!", I cried at the TV. Not only because I'm so unused to seeing serious medication promoted right up there with Cheerios (correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are strict controls on the advertisement of prescription medication in Australia, no?) but because Mandy has sold out in such a morally dirty way. Buy this perfume because I'm a celebrity? Whatever. Buy these powerful mood altering chemicals because I'm a celebrity? Scary.
Am I being harsh? Am I ranting for no good reason? Maybe one of those ads means he can do more Sondheim for the next year or two. Who am I to judge? Should I run right out there and get me some pills to scatter on top of my Cheerios whilst humming along to Sunday in the Park with George?
Hmmmm.... *makes pensive, mildly judgmental nod to camera, a la Naomi Robson*
Your thoughts? Or maybe just ignore the above late-night rant, and talk about Mandy Patinkin?

Firstly - tres adorable photo. You were funny looking little thing, weren't you.
Now, Snaz. I have pondered this conundrum for a some days, and can only come to the conclusion that yes, Mandy has sold out. Despite his talent and charm and OH MY GOD HOW GOOD IS HE IN THE PRINCESS BRIDE (which the gang made me watch for the first time other night and I now I just cannot stop saying 'You killed my father. PREAPRE TO DIE.'), it turns out the Mandster is human, flawed and has his price. Which is, most likely, substantial, and hopefully enough for him to do more crazyass theatre.
Oh well, it could be worse. At least he wasn't appearing at a Republican convention (I'm looking at you, Clint Eastewood/Kelsey Grammar/Shirley Jones).

Alright, after some thought...
Firstly, I think it is illegal to advertise prescription medication in Australia. So we won't be seeing Hugh Jackman or whatshisname from Stingers... Ian Stenlake (the poor man's Hugh Jackman) flogging anti-depressants (may cause anal leakage).
You are not being harsh. I agree with you. I'm probably not in the rampant anti-advertising camp with Bill Hicks - "you do a commercial, you are off the artistic roll call FOREVER" - but you wonder why a guy who probably has enough cash does that sort of thing. Then again, maybe they are really good anti-depressants. Maybe Mandy has battled with mental illness all though the dizzying highs brought about by the public reception of his famous interpretations of Sondheim and the earth-shattering lows of whatever his failures were. Maybe this was the drug that got him through it and he just wants to give a bit back AND WHO ARE WE TO STOP HIM.
But I suspect that's unlikely. Most probably is that they wrote him a massive cheque, he wavered, they doubled it, he accepted, donned the sweater, and spruiked until he could spruik no more. If he uses the money to spend two years helping a new composer with their songs, hooray for Mandy. If he buys three new Range Rovers, it's brickbats from me.
I hope he sings "Marry Me A Little".
