Come On Guys, Please
I tell you, amateur theatre is a tough gig. People tend to think of talentless hacks poncing around in an interpretive dance-type arrangement, or lots of nudity (not the good kind), or turgid "explorations of love and loss". Yawn.
In reality, we work our tits off to give you a professional show on a shoestring budget. Sometimes we succeed. Every time one of us does, it's another step towards showing the public that amateur theatre has a shitload to offer.
But every time someone goes with a promo shot like this:

It's about FIFTY STEPS BACK!!
Could you possibly look any more like tossers? Could your production of "Rent" - about AIDS and homophobia and DYING FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!! - appear any less "edgy"(TM)? Was the blue Artful Dodger cap a good idea in hindsight? Is that a serious facial expression from the guy on the far right, or is he just taking the piss?
I'm sure you do good work, Stella Entertainment. But please, spare a thought for the rest of us down here in the trenches.

Is it just me, or do they all look about twelve? Am I getting old?

I saw that in the paper this morning and my skin crawled right off my body. Good GOD! It's a joke isn't it? It is a joke.

If they were any good they'd be in professional theatre.

Sadly, I also read the article - drawn in as I was by the guy in the red with the Marcel Marceau expression (is that him being edgy or AIDS striken or what?)Worse still, some of the things that Mark Featherby said actually resonated with me. How dare he have such a bad photograph with so many well-meaning intentions?

*snickers*
Munkey, you are very correct. They are all really young - school-aged. A 'RENT' cast should ideally be much older (with the possible exception of Mimi, age 19).*
However, in defense of the show itself, they ARE promoting it as 'a chance for young performers to get a taste of what professional theatre is all about' etc. I seem to remember, a few years ago, the papers featured alarmingly similar photos of a group of young theatre things, including someone - let's call her 'Shellyfish' - wearing a pink streak in her hair and flared lycra trousers and what she hoped was a 'street' facial expression, as she promoted her own foray into the world of pro-am music theatre. And hasn't that experience sent her career on an upward trajectory? Eh? Eh?
Still - I reckon that unless it's a school play, you should go for age-appropriate casting in order to avoid your production looking like an excerpt from the Sydney School Spectacular.
Peter - you've linked to their website? Is that wise? I forsee a barrage of comment sledging ahead! STAND BY for the BATTLE of the independent theatre companies! Gentlemen, draw your (fake, plastic, with retractable blades so no-one gets hurt) swords!
*It should also ideally feature performances by you and I. But, you know, that might just be the voice of bitter jealousy speaking.

Christ, look how long that comment was. I want my blog back. *cries*

Jelly, nothing against the kids "having a go". Just lay off the toolish photos and we'll all be better off.
Munkey, yes, you are getting old. We all are. (Happy birthday to The Redhead, by the way, old bag that she is).
Rex Turps, you're a washed-up old hack. Supermarket Sweep, anyone? Shave off that mo and get a real job.
