Ladies' Night
The other night I had some friends over for dinner. Five ladies, as it turned out. You wouldn't know it from this blog, but in a dinner party situation I generally talk a lot. But with these five girls, I found myself unable to contribute much. Instead, I was in the unfamiliar position of listening for most of the night (I know, I should do it more often - I'm learning).
These are some of the things we (they) talked about:
FLOWERS
Yes, sending them is a cliche. This does not matter. Girls still want them. One exception: under no circumstances should they be purchased after midnight from the 24-hour florist on the corner of Lygon and Pigdon Streets, North Carlton. This is irrefutable evidence of infidelity, guilt, or incapacitating drunkenness.
BLOW JOBS
(light obscenity warning from here on in)
In which it was revealed that there exist girls who just "love being on their knees with a big cock in their mouth". Outwardly, I gasped in shock with everyone else - who are these submission-loving gals? Inwardly, I gasped in shock alone - where were these chicks when I was laying down my groove in seedy bars?
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
In which one of the girls revealed her experiences and her stick-it-to-the-man response involving lodging an offical complaint to HR then staring her harasser in the face during a mediation and "reminding" him (he'd forgotten, apparently) of his dirty past. Naively I thought that this was the absolute minimum action a woman would take if she was sexually harassed at work.
Imagine my surprise when the unanimous response of the other four - all of them intelligent, driven, funny and extraordinarily impressive women to whom I frequently look up - gasped in admiration, and declared that they would be reluctant to do the same. The way their workplaces operate (two top-tier law firms, a state government department and a prominent consultancy) such a decision could mark the end of a career.
Now these women are financially secure, brilliant educated, and terrifyingly intelligent - supposedly at the top of the list of those benefitting from advances in Sexual Discrimination law and the like. They are professionals who work for organisations that have thorough and generally fair rules about sexual harassment, and fairly straightforward procedures for dealing with it. I was stunned that reporting an incident in which they were sexually harassed was something that they would have to think long and hard about.
And frankly, I am embarrassed that I don't understand the depth of what girls are up against. Lads, we have it easy.
No, don't complain, we just do.
PUBLIC TOILETS
In which it was revealed that the mens' dunny at a Melbourne pub has a large translucent window that looks over the restaurant, not that you'd know it was translucent from inside the dunny. But through it those aforementioned girls can be seen (mainly by the weary staff) silhouetted and dispensing the aforementioned blowjobs. Men reciprocating is just as visible, but not surprisingly less common.
PREGNANCY
In which I learnt, or at least had retrieved from the dark corner of my mind marked "information you probably won't ever need", that it is possible and reasonably common for a heavier-than-usual period to actually be a miscarried fetus. As The Redhead put it: "you can be just pregnant for a little bit". Chalk up another potentially-traumatic, physically inconvenient thing that the ladies have to deal with.
NATURAL GLOW
It actually works. A quick dusting will furnish you with a healthy glow (much like the wholesome types in Richmond's new organic supermarket - someone feed those girls half a dozen cans and a pack of darts, please.) And a year's supply (one tub thing) can be purchased from most pharmacies, often with a free brush. Get into it.

Comments
I find myself unable to resist commenting on these topics. Must be too long since I sat around a table with a bunch of girls. Being not of a top law firm or otherwise respectable employ I feel I can offer an alternate perspective.
Flowers from ANY florist are fine, as long as you choose something fresh and generously bunchy and have them wrap them in the nice paper and not the Safeway bag with rubber band they will use if you don't intervene.
Unless one of the girls was 'fessing up as one who enjoys being on her knees gagging on a big cock I'd take it as hearsay.
If I ever worked in a place where making a sexual harrassment claim was tantamount to career suicide I would consider myself very unfortunate indeed. Women in corporate Australia sacrifice a lot. God help them if they want to have a baby then go back to work.
Natural Glow can be applied slightly overzealously or to an unrelated skin tone. There's a point at which it turns into a decidedly unnatural bronze-on-pale imitation of ruddy good health. Are you considering this for yourself?

We used to call that florist "Drive-thru Florist and Marriage Counselling"...
And as everyone knows, it's not pronounced "Nat-you-ral Glow", but "Nat-trule-glow", after the British woman who used to spruik it on Bert by getting a slightly embarrassed-looking woman and painting one of her legs orange.
Once I had a girly dinner with school friends in which at least half of those present could tell stories of having been stalked home, groped and flashed at in public. This shocked me, and I thought about writing an article about it. I sent an email to a bunch of friends, and got about seven detailed case stories. You'd think such things were rare, but it's stuff women deal with all the time and men rarely have to worry about.
(Although one of my respondents was a man who was stalked by a guy in a car. When he ducked into the cop shop to report the licence plate, the cops offhandedly told him this guy had a history of following young men in his car.)

Actually Peter, I would agree that women who enjoy fellatio are out there... you may take that as an admission Fluffy.
Mel is absolutely correct on the flower issue - any florist, must be bunchy. Nothing worse than an anorexic bunch of flowers.
Not much you can say about men behaving poorly, other than that it does happen with monotonous regularity. That being said though, there are any number of really wonderful guys out there who recognise that that sort of behaviour is totally inappropriate, and don't condone it. If you know where they hang out, please please let me know!
I'm from the country... so this may sound a tad naive, but where I come from women don't go into the mensroom. That I know of. Is this something that happens a lot in the city??
Posted by: Sass at November 20, 2005 09:33 PM
Thanks, ladies.
Fluffy, ta for the cosmetic advice. I will keep in mind when next striving for that manly glow.
Mel, you should write that article. Good luck getting into any of the mainstream press - they could care less about sexual harassment stories, I suspect. But now that you have your own magazine you don't have to listen to no-one.
Sass, I think city ladies only head to the mensroom to dole out blowjobs. Unless it's such a ferociously busy night and the queue for the ladies' is so long that a few brave souls will charm their way into the men's and pee, trying desperately not to think of the number of men holding their dicks not inches away.

a few years ago, in a fourth year gender studies class, half a dozen of my classmates told the same story: they'd graduated with law degrees, applied for jobs (at various different firms), gone to the interview, and been asked about their plans for marriage and babies.
I think only one of those high acheiving women had lasted more than a couple of years in her legal job. None of them had complained.
