Anti-Terror Australis

John Howard has declared that we should not expect immediate arrests with the passing of the new anti-terror legislation today.

Let me be the first to exclaim "Hoo-fucking-ray!"

It appears we are supposed to feel a warm fuzzy of faith in our democratic system because our new draconian legislation (with bi-partisan support - sigh) is not being used to IMMEDIATELY impinge upon the rights of citizens that the government has long-wanted to detain.

As if the fact that our rights won't be crushed tomorrow is some sort of consolation, nay, grand prize, for the fact that they may well be crushed in the future.

LATER: And what do you know. Another lie.

and wasn't the whole justification for passing the law the immediate and unspecified terrorist threat which loomed enormous (aka opposition to the IR changes)?

Not that I am baying for the new house arrest regime to begin, but saying that there'll be no immediate arrests is kinda like Nick Minchin saying after the last election result was confirmed that the coalition had never said there'd be no interest rate rises if they were returned.

Normally, I'd end this with the countdown to the next election but with Kim 'I can't believe he's not Howard' Beazley, there's not much point in hoping for change.

Ah well, they say New Zealand's lovely at this time of year.

So much for that.

Encouraging isn't it, that changing 'the' to 'a' can bring about the arrests of 11 people across two states in one night.

Thankyou J Ho and your band of Merry Men, how could I ever have doubted you.
