Ugly On The Inside

I, along with others, have made no secret of my disdain for Lawrence Money and Suzanne Carbone's daily Diary yawn-fest in The Age. No less worthy of disdain is Mik Grigg's Spy2 page in the Sunday version, a roundup (with photos) of the dazzling premiers and glittering openings graced with the presence of Melbourne's toothiest young post-private-schoolers. Why The Age thinks anyone actually gives a shit about the champagne-soaked exploits of pastels like Paige, Ellie, Hollie and Annabelle ("no, it's with two Ls and an E. Omigod!"), I have no idea. Frankly, I could care less.

Until old Mik (who's no oil painting herself, let's face it) helpfully asterisks the names identifying the shiny-of-face and pink-of-shirt at the Revenge of the Sith premiere, making sure we understood that they were "Not part of the freaks and geeks crew observed by SpyCam". Well THANK CHRIST, Mik.

God forbid you should print photos of people at a movie premiere WHO ACTUALLY WANT TO SEE THE MOVIE! Fans who have waited YEARS for this film and are UNSPEAKABLY FUCKING EXCITED rather than merely eager for an excuse to buy another top and get their solarium tan into Spy2 - "No, darling, put on your best frock, we're off to see, oh, goodness, I can't remember, but it's sure to be a smashing night! Don't let the freaks bother you, pumpkin, just smile for the camera and remember, if you're pretty, you can do ANYTHING!"

Tosser.

Where are you, daily Jonathan Green? Please come back. Your country needs you.

I should add a disclaimer. I wrote this before my blog was ready. It is thus a little out of date. Mik's still a tosser, but.

I'm intrigued that you say I could care less." I grew up using the expression "I couldn't care less," which seems more logical to me, because it's a statement of your indifference that you absolutely cannot care any less.

I file this one next to Americanisms like "It's not that big of a deal", "aluminum" (my friend Jeremy swears there is no extra i) and "You really lucked out." (Americans would mean you had good luck; Australians mean you had bad luck.)

This is a curious one. I, too, grew up using the expression "I couldn't care less". Then, in my wild teens, I began experimenting wantonly with "I could care less" after I picked it up from some wicked south-eastern suburbs delinquents. Now, in my maturing 20s, I use both, but with different semantic intentions. And in a blackspot of language, I use "lucked out" to mean both good luck and bad luck, depending on context/tone. (I should fix that). But I digress.

For mine, "I couldn't care less" is your more aggressive expression of disinterest. It can almost be nasty: "Lady Catherine De Bourgh, it seems you've fallen down some stairs and broken your hip. Well, I couldn't care less."

Whereas "I could care less" conveys a more world-weary sense of ambivalence. As if one is weighted with far more important considerations: "So Thorpie is again insisting he's not a homosexual. Frankly, I could care less."

That's just me, though. You're right that "I couldn't care less" is more logical. But "I could care less" has that nice, dismissive tone about it: "I could care less if I tried, but really, who's got the time these days?"
